Field trials - Chile View North America trial
Field trials in Chile In Chile, Region X, 60,000 Landcatch strain Atlantic salmon were treated with the SuperSmolt® process for a period of 6 weeks. The SuperSmolt® group was transferred to sea in January of 2002, at an average weight of 41.9 grams. The Control group, having been subjected to an artificial winter photoperiod to induce smoltification, was transferred 9 days later, having an average weight of 37.8 grams.

After 15 months at the marine site the SuperSmolt® treated fish were harvested at an average weight of 5.1 kg. At the time of the SuperSmolt® harvest the Controls, weighing only an average of 3.1 kg, remained in net pens until they reached harvest weight. Fish from the two fastest growing Control cages were eventually harvested 55 days later at an average weight of 4.75 kg. A summary of the results appear in Table 1.

Summary of harvest data
Of significant interest in this trial is the superior Feed Conversion Ratio and Seawater Growth Factor exhibited by the SuperSmolt® group, as seen in Figures 5 & 6.

Benefits of SuperSmolt® Illustrated in Chile Region X Trial

Earlier Transfers - Larger Smolt
The SuperSmolt® group was transferred to sea 9 days earlier than the Controls and on average 10% larger, as the Controls had to go through an artificial winter photoperiod to help induce smoltification. The SuperSmolt® process allows you to completely avoid putting fish through an artificial winter and the subsequent loss in growth and delay associated with artificial winters.

Expand Hatchery Capacity
By eliminating the artificial winter, fish can be transferred to the sea site earlier. While in this trial 9 days of hatchery production time was eliminated, the use of SuperSmolt® allows the successful transfer of smolt as small as 15 grams, freeing up capacity to produce additional smolt.

Improve Growth - Earlier Harvests
When the SuperSmolt® treated fish were harvested at an average of 5.1 kg, the Control fish weighed an average of 3.1 kg. A combination of earlier seawater transfer and accelerated seawater growth allowed the producer to harvest the SuperSmolt® group 55 days earlier than the Controls. Equally important, the use of SuperSmolt® allowed for a reduction in the marine growout time of 46 days - almost 10%.
