Through its breakthrough discoveries, MariCal has isolated the biological "thermostat," or "master switch," that enables fish to sense and respond to nutrients and salinity/ionic composition in their aquatic environment. The specific applications developed from these discoveries overcome barriers that have limited world aquaculture operations. Through its proprietary product offerings and its further research, MariCal is dramatically changing current methods for raising certain species of fish - even to the point that fish normally raised in marine environments (flounder) can now be raised in fresh water.

MariCal was founded in 1996 as AquaBio Products Sciences. Through 2001, we focused entirely on intensive research, product development, and international patent protection. In late 2001 our name was changed to MariCal, and we initiated commercial sales activities for the SuperSmolt^® process -- to global salmon producers. The SuperSmolt^® process is now in commercial application worldwide.

Located in Portland, Maine USA, MariCal has over 10,500 square feet of space dedicated to its R+D activities including a state-of-the art biological laboratory and a large aquatic laboratory. We also leverage our scientific resources by outsourcing selected research efforts and by collaborating with scientists internationally.
