Marical - Solutions for Global Aquaculture
Products in Development

Worldwide fisheries production will soon be inadequate to meet the protein needs of the world's population. Aquaculture is the answer to meet this global need. New technologies developed to support industry growth must be environmentally friendly and totally safe for the consumer.

Aquaculture is the fastest growing segment of world food production, having risen from 10% of world fisheries production in the early-80s to 33% at the turn of the century (roughly 40 million metric tons, worth US $55 billion). This is expected to grow to 50% of world production by early in the next decade (over 100 million metric tons, worth over US $150 billion). The most valuable and fastest expanding species are being grown in North and South America, Europe and Japan.

Aquaculture growth is being driven by operations of increasing scale and sophistication; an industrialization of the sector is taking place.

Long-term trends in the sector:
  • continued drive to lower the costs of production
  • demand for consistently higher product quality and usability
  • species diversification to replace depleted wild-catch stocks, serve diverse market niches and reduce producer reliance on a single species
  • demand for transparency and traceability at all stages of production and distribution
Traditional science-based approaches:
  • genetics/breeding
  • nutrition (feed formulations & delivery systems)
  • health (drugs, vaccines, etc.)
  • basic animal husbandry techniques

MariCal's approach:

In contrast, MariCal's approach is to use our extensive scientific know-how and our unique knowledge of calcium receptors (CaSRs) to develop all-natural, environmentally friendly, and efficient solutions that directly and powerfully address these long-term trends for the global aquaculture industry.
